Description:

Custom T-Shirt illustration I created for the Hot Rod Power Tour in the Southwest I was hired to design.

I haven’t had a lot of opportunities to illustrated cars, so this was a particular challenge.  But I hope I pulled it off accurately.  If not, I made sure to cover it up with plenty of flames to distract, and threw a steer skull in their for good measure.

T-Shirt illustration of a giant woman attacking a bunch of army guys in this parody t-shirt for The News Junkie website.

The design was set up with special sun-activated color-changing ink, so that the colors only appear when out doors.  Really cool effect.  I gave this a halftone retro coloring treatment to try to emulate classic horror/fantasy magazines.

Van’s General Store in NYC hired me to create this insane illustration of a crazy tattooed shark riding a bike through the city.

This was designed for a set of jackets as promotional gifts for the employees – the illustration is packed with symbols that represent different aspects of all their personalities.  No need to explain, it wouldn’t help!  Had a lot of fun with this.

I created this poster illustration of a motorcycle on the beach for the Wasaga Beach Rally in 2016.

Never been to the beach, but it looks amazing – it’s part of the longest fresh water beach in the world, located in Ontario Canada.  The rally is one of the biggest around apparently – it was a thrill to be hired to do the t-shirt.

Here’s a cool banner I illustrated of a team of dragon characters for a hot sauce brand made by Bonfatto’s Restaurants.  The banner features a character from each flavor of the hot sauce brand, and will be used at a massive size at trade shows and competitions.

Description:

I illustrated this t-shirt design for Bongjour in conjunction with the popular Chief Greenbud to celebrate his song “It’s 4:20 Somewhere,” a parody of Jimmy Buffet’s tune.  The design was printed as full-color direct to garment.  For this design, I tried a new technique:  instead of inking the design, I just scanned in my pencil drawing (which was done on paper) and colored the piece underneath the pencils.  I’m pretty happy with the result – it gives it a more realistic, and vibrant, and softer feel.

Description:

I illustrated this promotional poster and album cover for the hip-hop artist Bukshot who partnered with Violent J from The Insane Clown Posse, Madchild, and JellyRoll.  The album was a special edition, and released in a DVD sized package, which allowed me to create a cool portrait orientation, instead of having to squeeze everything into a tiny square.  Bukshot wanted the four artists illustrated as comic book characters, fighting a horde of zombies.  I enjoyed this so much!

Digitally painted illustration of an angry Rottweiler taking a bite out of a big Piston for the racing brand Commando Racing Gear.  This was a fun challenge to work on, because drawing realistic dogs, especially specific breeds, can be very tricky to get just right.  I’m pretty happy with the result.  This design will be separated to print with simulated process silk-screening and sold at drag racing shows and shops.

I was hired by a fabric pot manufacturer for growing plants to create a t-shirt for their conventions.  They wanted something that displayed their product in a way that people would want to wear, even if they weren’t familiar with the product.  Naturally, I went with a skull.  The design was set up for limited color silk-screen (I believe 4 colors).  They were kind enough to send me a shirt, and it turned out great!

Description:

Silk-screen poster illustration of a happy Loch Ness Monster I created for the band Lochness Monster.  I had a blast working on this.  The band gave me a ton of freedom on this design, and I came up with the idea of having the Loch Ness Monster looking friendly, with a severed arm dangling from its mouth, and the collected trophy/cameras of tourists hung around his neck.  He’s an elusive fella!  The design was set up for silk-screening using around 5 colors, created primarily for promotional posters and apparel for the band.

T-Shirt illustration I created of a mutated Chem Dawg with three heads for a marijuana-themed apparel line.  Each shirt in the collection celebrates a different strain.  The client wanted me to illustrate a big crazy mutated, and glowing dog standing in a spilled container of toxic waste.  I thought it would be funny to have each of the three heads to be a different dog breed with a different personality.   More to come in this series! Description:

Logo design I illustrated of a punk rock blowfish for a vaping brand called Blowfish Competition Vape.  When we started, the only concept we had was the name “Blowfish Vapes,” so I experimented with a few different styles of blowfish, including one that was a salty pirate.  We like the concept of making the blowfish a punk rocker with a mohawk and piercings, including a big hook through his lip.  I tried to use a color palette with high contrast so it would stand out when it’s printed on the small label that goes on a vaping label.

Description:

A series of character concept turn-arounds I illustrated for a series of vinyl zombie figurines that will be manufactured and sold in a catalog.  This isn’t the first time I’ve created turn-arounds for figurines, but it’s the first zombie series.  I can’t wait to see how the final molded and painted models turn out.  To make this as efficient as possible, I first sent sketches to the client for just the front view.  Once approved, I used a 3D model in Manga Studio, positioned it close to the position of the front view, and then turned it to the side and back.  I then drew the other angles using that model as reference.  Pretty effective little trick!

Concept art characters I created for a book publisher, taking characters we had already created, and outfitting them for exploring the undersea depths!  The character designs will be used to illustrate their educational materials and lessons.  Each year the team uses a different theme and concept to tie their lessons together.  I really enjoyed the whole process, from developing the characters in sketches, to coloring and rendering the final versions.  I tried to add a bit of style into the characters to keep them from becoming generic.  I especially enjoyed creating the robot character.

Description:

This is a personal piece I did for myself recently of a biker skeleton riding through flames on a motorcycle.  Pretty cutting edge stuff, I know!  I experimented with some new techniques here that I’m happy with – combining a bit of digital painting with comic book lineart.  I’m hoping to license this artwork for other uses, and print it on some apparel.

Description:

Book cover illustration of a zombie usher enjoying a fresh box of buttered brains in a movie theater I illustrated for Phillip Cerreta’s new movie trivia book, “The Monster Book of Movie Monster Trivia.”  The client came to me with the idea of having a zombie in a theater enjoying a box of brains as if it were popcorn, and I thought it would be funny to dress him up in a tattered usher’s uniform.  I love finding new ways to draw zombies!

Description:

I was hired to design and illustrate a series of comic book characters for a promotional series advertising a line of industrial pumps.  It was a challenge finding a way to take a piece of industrial equipment and turn it into something that could be used to tell a story.  We decided to create a pair of super heroes that used the pumps as tools that transform into things like jetpacks, weapons, and other gadgets.  We first explored the idea of having the characters be robots that were actually made from the pumps themselves, but we decided that it would be harder to tell a story this way.

Scholastic

Description:

The nice folks at Scholastic hired me to draw concept illustrations for characters in a redesign of an educational app called Sushi Monster, in which kids solve math problems with a friendly but terrifying sushi chef.  I explored a lot of different character sizes, shapes, and attitudes.  We initially thought the best direction would be to create the main characters as zombies, and the supporting characters as other types of monsters.  Unfortunately, due to a gypsy curse, the project was cancelled in the early stages before we had a chance to really get going.

The News Junkie

Description:

The News Junkie, a news blog and radio show, hired me to illustrated a silk-screen t-shirt design to be used in their marketing and giveaways.  They wanted an illustration that fit the slogan “Dangerous to Listen To,” to play on the idea that their news stories are often filled with chaos and danger.  After sketching a couple of concepts, we came up with this idea to have a flood of dangerous items like swords, knives, and rabid dogs bursting from a guy’s headphones.  Silk-screened with four colors and a whole lot of death and destruction.

Description:

Digitally painted t-shirt illustration of an evil skull with wings and barbaric weapons I created for the dark apparel company Spiral Direct. This was inspired by a similar design I had done in the past, but taken in a more realistic rendering direction.  It was a lot of fun exploring the same subject matter in a different style – it’s a great way to discover the limitations and strengths of a particular method.

Pål Firat Yildirim

Description:

I was hired to design this illustration of Uncle Sam for apparel and a vehicle wrap for the russefeiring tradition.  If you haven’t heard of it, basically russefeiring involves an entire class of Norwegian students renting a bus (a Russebuss), painting every inch of it with really cool street art, and then partying in it night and day for an entire month during graduation.  The different classes wear their designs ever where they go as they clash with rival classes.  I’ve done a bunch of these now, and really enjoy it.
