PROJECT:
I was commissioned by Pedretti Pinball to draw all the artwork (Playfield, Plastics, Backglass, Side Blades, and Cabinet Artwork) for a new special 30th Anniversary edition of the classic Tales of the Arabian Nights pinball machine.
I paid homage to the original layout, while redrawing everything from the ground up, adding new characters, and modernizing everything. The artwork consists of over 100 characters and objects (genies, belly dancers, giant cyclops monsters, warrior skeletons, and legendary characters like Sinbad and Aladdin).
All hand-drawn artwork by a real human. No Ai-generated nonsense, or Photoshop filtered clip-art or paint-overs used here.
Artwork created by ©Brian Allen, FlylandDesigns, inc. All Rights Reserved.

Backglass
I drew completely new backglass artwork for the TOTAN 30th Anniversary edition. I created an entirely new layout, while adding new characters from the game and the Tales of the Arabian Nights. Everything was drawn by hand, no Ai generated images, or photoshop paint-overs.
Early Drafts:
With Pedretti Pinball, I worked through several stages: Sketch, Pencil, and Ink, before moving to color. I keep each character on its own layer so its easier to move around and experiement.
Detail Shots and Final Color:
Once Pedretti Pinball approved the final ink drawing, I added color. We experimented with different background compositions, but ultimately landed on one that combined multiple drafts, with the tiger face in the sky, above the traveling camels riders.
Playfield Design
The entire Playfield for the TOTAN 30th Anniversary edition was completely redrawn from the ground-up. We kept some layout elements the same that were pertinent to gameplay, but I added many more characters to give the playfield more life and detail. This is the most elaborate playfield I’ve every created, in terms of number of characters and objects. I also had to recreate all of the insert borders and text from scratch.
Early Playfield Drafts:
The playfield is the most complicated piece of the entire Art Package, because of how many different elements there are. But also, it’s very challenging to make sure that important pieces of the artwork are not covered by ramps, toys, and other obstructions, so I constantly have to refer back to photos of the assembled prototype to plan for this.
Here are some early sketches and ink drawings for the playfield artwork.
Detail Shots and Final Color:
Once Pedretti Pinball approved the final ink drawings for the Playfield, I added color.
Photos of the playfield on the finished game:
These are early prototype photos taken by Pedretti Pinball showing my playfield artwork in testing with ramps and toys installed.
Cabinet Design
For the cabinet design, Pedretti Pinball wanted me to design something that had a similar composition to the original game, but with more characters and style added. I had the most fun with the backbox sides, drawing an undead skeleton warrior, and the beautiful story teller.
The cabinet was printed with a special metallic blue foil ink that highlighted certain trim elements.
Early Cabinet Drafts:
I followed the same sketch, pencil, ink, and color process as the other pieces of the package, submitting to the client for feedback at each stage.

Plastics
I even designed brand new plastics and decals for the entire machine.
